First off, I am a strong believer in small business, I believe in brave people doing brave things by following their passion. Now I’m sure some of your are reading this and going jeez, another one of these bleeding hearts and I am also sure you have heard the cliche, small business in the backbone of the economy. This is so overused and feels like the lingering sentiments of an outdated philosophy. I get it, you hear the same thing you become desensitized to it. The thing is, small business is that backbone.
Apart from my own sentiments about small business, a Forbes article claimed that 63% of new jobs being created from small businesses between 1993 and mid-2013. If that doesn’t make you see how important supporting small business you need a good slap to the face.
Apart from being economically smart to support small, as the customer, you get more control over what you are buying. Why? Because Walmart isn’t really going to care about what you want or need, but that local pet store is going to listen to you, and maybe even stock a product because of a suggestion you made. Plus customer service is more genuine vs the customer service someone read out of a training book.
To me, small business is a reason to get out of bed in the morning. You have a purpose, something that you constructed yourself, and when people shop small business you are in honesty validating that person and their efforts.
